History — from a cozy farming community to a summer resort area

Summit, NJ, is nestled in the crux between Highway 24 and Interstate 78 bordered by Springfield, Short Hills, Chatham, and New Providence. Located high on a ridge in the North NJ area within the Rahway Valley and Raritan Valley regions, Summit, NJ, is home to around 22,000 residents.

​​​​​​​Originally, it was incorporated as its own city in 1869 by an act of the New Jersey legislature. However, it was reincorporated in 1899. Some say the town got its name because of a sawmill owner who approved passage to the Essex and Morris railroad for a path to the ‘summit of the Short Hills,’ others say that its name originated from the Summit Lodge, which was a house in which James Kent moved to in 1837 — and it still stands today.
